Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to understand how Korean-Chinese grandparents think about their grandchildren's upbringing.
Methods: Data were collected from in-depth interviews with nine elders bringing a grandchild up and field notes from June to August, 2017. Data were analyzed by Giorgi¡¯s method.

Results: Four constituents and fifteen sub-constituents were derived: ¡®Different parenting than I thought¡¯, ¡®Difficult to nurture properly¡¯, ¡®Barely living with the help from surrounding people¡¯, ¡®Rewarding growth of grandchildren, but my future is gloomy¡¯. Participants have overcome various difficulties related to parenting, economic status, deteriorated health, psychological burdens, and lived a life devoted to caring for their grandchildren with a responsibility that was hard to bear as an elder. It is a reality that there is no definite guarantee for their lives as their support is informal and can be discontinued with little notice.

Conclusion: Based on these results, it is necessary to develop and apply tailored grandparenting programs that consider their socioeconomic and medical conditions including regular visits to Korean-Chinese families to provide information on their grandchildren¡¯s education.
