Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to understand how Korean-Chinese grandparents think about their grandchildren's upbringing.
Methods: Data were collected from in-depth interviews with nine elders bringing a grandchild up and field notes from June to August, 2017. Data were analyzed by Giorgi’s method.
Results: Four constituents and fifteen sub-constituents were derived: ‘Different parenting than I thought’, ‘Difficult to nurture properly’, ‘Barely living with the help from surrounding people’, ‘Rewarding growth of grandchildren, but my future is gloomy’. Participants have overcome various difficulties related to parenting, economic status, deteriorated health, psychological burdens, and lived a life devoted to caring for their grandchildren with a responsibility that was hard to bear as an elder. It is a reality that there is no definite guarantee for their lives as their support is informal and can be discontinued with little notice.
Conclusion: Based on these results, it is necessary to develop and apply tailored grandparenting programs that consider their socioeconomic and medical conditions including regular visits to Korean-Chinese families to provide information on their grandchildren’s education.
